PONTIAN: A total of 2,500 mangrove tree seeds were planted during the Kembara Redah Lumpur programme organised by Tanjung Pelepas Port (TPP) and Sungai Pulai Mangrove Reserve management recently. Hundreds of participants comprising government agency staff and secondary school students around Gelang Patah, planted the mangrove species, Rhizophora Apiculata and Rhizophara Murconata, on a one-hectare site. “With such a programme, we hope that the young generation will develop concern and responsibility towards conserving the stability of the environment, especially mangrove swamps,” said TPP Corporate Communication, Property and Free Zone department general manager Md Derick Basir. Meanwhile, Southern Johor Forest officer Rajihan Rahim said TPP’s initiative ought to be emulated by all parties, as the country’s heritage like mangrove swamp forests needed continuous monitoring to ensure they were not threatened. Johor Ports Authority assistant general manager Siti Noraishah Azizan said such activities needed to be carried out from time to time to increase public awareness and responsibility towards the environment. — Bernama
